Baptism

WHY DO WE BAPTIZE?

JESUS modeled and commanded baptism. The beginning of JESUS’ ministry was marked by HIS baptism in the Jordan River, and HIS climactic closing words in Matthew’s gospel say to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER and of the SON and of the HOLY SPIRIT…” (Matthew 28:19).

Why do we have baptisms at MissioDei? We believe baptism is a public declaration that we belong to JESUS.  Baptism symbolizes that we have been crucified with CHRIST and rise to new life with HIM.

What does baptism symbolize? Baptism symbolizes our union with CHRIST by the power of HIS resurrection from the dead (Romans 6). Being lowered beneath the water represents our participation in HIS death - the death of our life apart from JESUS.  Scripture says without CHRIST, we cannot exist in GOD’s holy and life-giving presence. But JESUS did what we could not do for ourselves - HIS undeserved death on the cross on Good Friday has paid for our sins.  HIS resurrection on Easter Sunday demonstrates HiIS victory over all sin and death.  Those who place their faith in JESUS for the forgiveness of their sins find a new life - one not defined by our empty works, but by HIS perfect righteousness. Rising up from beneath the water represents our participation in the new life and identity we are given by JESUS through faith.
