Faith and Works
Speaker: Brian Fulton

“So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” - James 2:17 (NLT)

Devotional

When the scripture says something that is hard to understand, there is often a deeper truth waiting to be found. James is concerned with a dynamic that had already begun in the early stages of the church. People were hearing the gospel and professing faith in the way of Jesus, but not matching what they heard with how they lived. Their ideology did not meet reality. The way they lived was like a shell, an empty affirmation, a body without a spirit. James says, “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.” The faith that matters, that is real, is a faith that translates belief into action.

Discussion

What good is it if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions?
Based on how James talks about faith here, how would you define faith?

Prayer

Pray for the Holy Spirit to give opportunities this week to put your faith and prayer life into action. As you go about your week, be intently watching and waiting for the opportunities of action that you prayed for. If you feel the gentle tug of the Holy Spirit that calls you to engage somehow, have faith and trust that the Holy Spirit will give you the words to speak.
Pray against a faith purely of logic, reason, internal reflection, and intellectualism. Ask God to bring you into the divine “more” that He has for your community.
