“My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?” - James 2:1 (NLT)

Devotional

The world is always propping people up and pulling them down in an endless loop of assessment, evaluation and judgment of one's worthiness. Some are treated favorably and others are not. This is not the case with God, who sees all and loves all equally. God wants a Church that reflects His abundant love. God’s love is generous, sacrificial and unconditional. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul and mind. Love for God compels one to fulfill the second and equally important commandment of loving the neighbor as one’s very self. In the Kingdom of God there is no room for partiality.

Discussion

Bring to mind and share a few of the ways you’ve found yourself favoring some people over others. Listen to one another gracefully; this is a practice of freedom, not shame.
What is the good news in James’s admonitions in James 2:1-7?

Prayer

Pursue true unity and equality in the Body of Christ by meditating on Psalm 133 & Galatians 3:28. Ask the Holy Spirit to cast a vision of what your community could look like with unity and love in place of partiality and favoritism.
Pray generally for people who have been a victim of partiality in your congregation or community. If you have negatively contributed to partiality, confess before the Lord and your siblings in Christ. If you have been the victim of partiality and feel comfortable sharing, confess that and allow people around you to respond with prayer and words of encouragement.
