The Liberating Word
Speaker: Melissa Pillman

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” - James 1:22-25 (NLT)

Devotional

In this passage, James uses the illustration of a mirror. In his time there were no photographs and few had a mirror. One might say that if you did see a reflection of yourself it would be easy to quickly forget what you look like. This is similar to the way one hears God's word. At first glance it is interesting or compelling, but easily forgotten. James addresses this dynamic by reminding the Church that scripture and the message concerning Jesus is truly ‘the perfect law of freedom’. God's way is far from restrictive; it brings transformation and enrichment in life.

Prayer

Pray for the Holy Spirit to stir a longing for God’s word. Pray that we would be like the blessed person in Psalm 1 whose delight is in the law of the Lord, meditating on God’s law day and night.
Meditate and pray through the words of Psalm 1.
